Burial Law

Baha’is must be buried (cremation is disallowed) and they must be buried within a limit of an hour’s journey in distance from the place where they died and preferably as soon as possible after the death. For adults, there is a funeral prayer that is performed in congregation (the only congregational salat permitted in Baha’i shari‘ah). Baha’is are buried in coffins of wood, stone or crystal or any hard material with their feet in the direction of the qiblah. Adults are also buried wearing a ring upon which is inscribed a verse: “I came forth from God, and return unto Him, detached from all save Him, holding fast to His Name, the Merciful, the Compassionate.” 94
