Divorce Law

As in Islamic law, divorce is permissible but strongly discouraged. Before the divorce is affected, a “year of patience” is prescribed with the husband maintaining his wife (except if she has committed adultery). During this year the husband and wife do not cohabitant or have sexual relations. If at the end of the year the couple is still estranged then a divorce comes into effect. There is no limit to the amount of times a couple may be divorced and remarried. There are no specific laws regarding division of property, maintenance and custody of children after the divorce, but the local Spiritual Assembly should assist the couple to arrive at an amicable and mutually acceptable agreement.90
