Holy Days

Baha’is have a fairly large number of holy days, nine are singled out for the suspension of work and study. They commemorate important historical dates and are as follows:

  • Feast of Naw-Ruz (21 March – work and study suspended)
  • The Festival of Ridvan (21 April to 2 May 1863 – work and study suspended on the first, ninth and twelfth days)
  • Declaration of the Bab (23 May 1844 – work and study suspended)
  • Ascension of Baha’ Allah (29 May 1892 – work and study suspended)
  • Martyrdom of the Bab (9 July 1850 – work and study suspended)
  • Birth of the Bab (20 October 1819 – work and study suspended)
  • Birth of Baha’ Allah (12 November 1817 – work and study suspended)
  • Day of the Covenant (26 November)
  • Passing of ‘Abd al-Baha’ (28 November 1921)

Usually Baha’is gather together on their holy days and recite prayers, read passages from scripture and share information about the specific holy day being commemorated.80
